Nonlinear atomic response to intense ultrashort x rays.

چکیده
The nonlinear absorption mechanisms of neon atoms to intense, femtosecond kilovolt x rays are investigated. The production of Ne(9+) is observed at x-ray frequencies below the Ne(8+), 1s(2) absorption edge and demonstrates a clear quadratic dependence on fluence. Theoretical analysis shows that the production is a combination of the two-photon ionization of Ne(8+) ground state and a high-order sequential process involving single-photon production and ionization of transient excited states on a time scale faster than the Auger decay. We find that the nonlinear direct two-photon ionization cross section is orders of magnitude higher than expected from previous calculations.

Generation and Application of Energetic Heavy Ion and X-ray via 12tw50fs Laser-solid Interaction
Energetic ions and ultrashort X-rays were generated by an intense ultrashort laser interacting with a copper target. Fast ions up to 3 MeV were observed with CR-39 nuclear track detector sheets when 7 TW laser was used. Cu ∼ Cu ions with the energy from 50 keV to 220 keV were detected with a Thomson parabola detector in the case of the laser power of 2.5 TW. Time-resolved X-ray diffraction was ...

We investigate the possible reasons for the discrepancy between the theoretical two-photon ionization cross section, ∼10−56 cm4 s, of Ne8+ obtained within the perturbative nonrelativistic framework for monochromatic light [S. Novikov and A. Hopersky, J. Phys. B 34, 4857 (2001)] and the experimental value, 7 × 10−54 cm4 s, reported in [G. Doumy et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 083002 (2011)] at a p...
متن کاملEnhancement of high-order harmonic generation in intense laser interactions with solid density plasma by multiple reflections and harmonic amplification
High order harmonic generation (HHG) from laser solid-density plasma interactions is considered as a promising way to generate bright and ultrashort burst of x-rays. One of the key issues for HHG is the low conversion efficiency due to a power law fall off in harmonic intensity. Here, we explore a possible mechanism for HHG enhancement by reflecting an intense laser pulse multiple times between...
متن کاملNonlinear Thomson scattering: A tutorial
Recent advances in table-top, ultrahigh intensity lasers have led to significant renewed interest in the classic problem of Thomson scattering. An important current application of these scattering processes is the generation of ultrashort-pulse-duration x rays. In this tutorial, the classical theory of nonlinear Thomson scattering of an electron in an intense laser field is presented. It is fou...
متن کاملTheoretical analysis of hard x-ray generation by nonperturbative interaction of ultrashort light pulses with a metal
The interaction of intense femtosecond pulses with metals allows for generating ultrashort hard x-rays. In contrast to plasma theories, tunneling from the target into vacuum is introduced as electron generation step, followed by vacuum acceleration in the laser field and re-entrance into the target to generate characteristic x-rays and Bremsstrahlung. For negligible space charge in vacuum, the ...
